Game 1
SAN ANTONIO, TX- In a closely contested affair under sunny and warm conditions for the opening weekend of softball play, the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers fell to EIU with a final score of 4-3 on Friday morning. Despite a valiant effort, the Lady Panthers were unable to clinch the victory in their season opener.
The game saw impressive performances from several Panthers, with senior
Aerin Talley, freshman
Michelle Meeks, and freshman
Kearstin Tinsley all crossing the plate to score runs for Prairie View A&M. Key contributions came from senior
Janaiya Thomas, who had two hits and drove in two runs, and sophomore Isabela Rodriguez, who added a hit, an RBI, and showcased her all-around game with a stolen base, a walk, and a strikeout.
Cailin Massey started on the mound for the Panthers, later giving way to
Brielle Moreno in a strategic move during the seventh inning. Despite strong tactics and efforts, the game's critical moments included some setbacks, such as Meeks advancing to second on an error and Thomas hitting into a double play in the ninth inning.
As the Panthers regroup and prepare for their upcoming games, their performance in this game sets a determined tone for the season. Prairie View A&M will look to build on their experiences and claim their first win soon. Currently, the Panthers hold a record of 0-1 but remain hopeful and resilient.
Game 2
In game two of their season opener the Prairie View A&M Panthers faced a tough defeat against the University of Texas Arlington (UTA) also on Friday, at San Antonio, losing 0-4. This game marks a rocky start to the Panthers' season, bringing their record to 0-2.
The Panthers struggled to find their rhythm against UTA's solid defense and aggressive batting. Bautista from UTA was particularly formidable, driving in three runs with a monumental home run in the 3rd inning, contributing significantly to UTA's victory. Alongside Bautista, Baylor and Sailor also contributed to the scoreboard, with Sailor and Baylor scoring runs. The collective effort of UTA's players led by Hampton, who pitched a complete game shutout, allowed UTA to maintain a clear lead throughout the game.
From the mound for Prairie View A&M, Moreno opened the game and pitched three innings, giving up four earned runs before being replaced by
Madalyne Martinez, who held UTA scoreless in the following three innings. Despite the pitching efforts and the defensive plays, the Panthers could not generate the offensive breakthrough needed to change the course of the game.
As the Panthers look ahead, they remain in San Antonio to face UT-Arlington again on Saturday. The team hopes to adjust their strategies and showcase a stronger performance in this upcoming rematch.
