    2009 SWAC Championship Football Team
The 2009 Prairie View A&M football team won the first SWAC Championship in 45 seasons in posting a 9-1 record and an undefeated mark in SWAC play.

The Panthers opened the season with a great defensive effort in a tough 17-7 win over Texas Southern in the annual Labor Day Classic at Reliant Stadium.

The only blemish on the 2009 record was a loss at FBS member New Mexico State. QB K.J. Black, who entered the game in the second half, led the charge to nearly erase an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit to lead a pair touchdown drives in the final six minutes in the three-point defeat.

After having three weeks off between contests, the Panthers returned to action in the annual State Fair Classic game in Dallas against Grambling. The Panthers jumped out to a big lead to set the tone. After losing the lead late in the third quarter, PVAMU took it right back and went on to win 35-32, the first victory over GSU since 1986.

The win was the first of an eight-game winning streak to end the season. After a 24-10 win at Alabama State, the Panthers posted a dominant homecoming win over Miss. Valley State (38-0). PVAMU then went on the road to post a hard-fought win at Southern before a national TV audience on ESPNU.

In what became the first of two meetings this season, the Panthers jumped out big and held off a late rally to defeat Alabama A&M (33-27).

PVAMU clinched the SWAC’s Western Division title with a 34-14 win at Alcorn State, and completed league play undefeated with a 49-17 home win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

In the SWAC Championship game in Birmingham, Black threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes to give the Panthers the lead for good in the 30-24 win.

HC Henry Frazier earned several SWAC Coach of the Year accolades, including national Coach of the Year Honors by College Sporting News, Sheridan Broadcasting Network, and The Sports Network

Black was the SWAC’s Offensive Player of the Year, earned several All-America accolades, and was the NCAA’s statistical champion for passing efficiency and was the College Sporting News and Sheridan Broadcasting SWAC Player of the Year. OL James Dekle, DL Quinton Spears and SS Anthony Beck earned Sheridan Broadcasting All American honors, with Beck also being named an FCS Sports Network All American
