5/10/2025 1:12:00 PM

The men's and women's track adn field teams are set to participate in the SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Baton Rouge at the A.W. Mumford Stadium on the Southern University campus. The event, scheduled to take place from May 11-May 13, is a significant event for the Panthers, especially considering their historical performances and standout athletes.

The Panthers have a commendable history in the SWAC championships, with the men's team most recently capturing the title in 2022 and the women's team winning their latest championships in 2023. Both teams have shown strong performances recently, with the women's team placing second in the SWAC Indoor Championships in March 2025, and both teams are determined to replicate or improve their outdoor results from the previous season.

Key athletes include Christina Fitzpatrick, the defending women's 10,000m champion, and Savoria Anderson, who is the defending outdoor champion and reigning indoor champion in the women's triple jump and is ranked first in the SWAC for the event. Notably, Jasir Miller is also a significant competitor, currently ranked fifth in the women's 400m. Sebastian Cruz, noted for his recent recognition as 'Newcomer of the Week', is ranked fifth in the men's 800m and expected to make a considerable mark. Christion Derrick is entering the meet ranked third in the men's 400m, Zara Richardson being among the top 8 in the women's 800, and Thierry Garcon ranked fifth in the men's 5000m. In the hurdles, Lashavia Barclay and Miracle Price are also among the top 8 in the women's 400mh.

In the 3000m steeplechase, both Kejun Wilson and Maya Clark are both ranked 5th in their respective categories. The women's high jump sees 4 Panthers competing for the top spot, with Raina Thomas ranked 2nd, and Demaya Malone, Morgan Davila (reigning indoor champion), and Madison Muckelroy closely behind.

Darryl Muckelroy is ranked first in the men's pole vault, with solid support from teammate Damion Phillips, ranked third. The women's pole vault also has top competitors, with Madison Muckelroy, Jordyn Hubbert, and Jaliyah Gray among the top athletes entering the event.

Kaiden Berry also presents a dual threat, ranked second in both men's shot put and discus, posing as a strong contender for the Panthers. On the women's side, Keonna Otis also shows dominance in the women's discus as the top ranked athlete and second in the shot put. Krislyn Green and Michaela Booker, recent SWAC Newcomer of the Week, are also ranked in the shot put, and Booker also ranked in the women's discus and javelin.

The championship promises three days of intense and competitive track and field action, and Prairie View A&M is poised to make a significant impact with its skilled athletes ready to strive for top honors.

The championships will be streamed live on SWAC Digital Network along with the meet schedule and other meet information available on SWAC.org
