Monica Smith played for Prairie View A&M University from 1982 to 1986 and was a foundational figure in the women’s basketball program. A powerful forward with a strong presence in the paint, Smith averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds per game during the 1985 season. Her performance helped set a new standard for excellence within the program and contributed significantly to the team’s rise during the mid-1980s. Her leadership and consistent play made her one of the most impactful players of her era at PVAMU.

After Prairie View, Monica transitioned from player to mentor, dedicating her life to coaching and developing the next generation of athletes. She served as a coach at Scarborough High School, Jefferson Davis High School, and Aldine High School, before taking on the role of Head Basketball Coach at Plummer Middle School in the Aldine Independent School District, where she continues to lead, inspire, and make an impact.

Off the court, Monica extended her commitment to service through her nonprofit organization, the New Wine Recovery Center, a transitional home for women returning to society after incarceration. Her work in the community reflects the same passion, discipline, and heart she brought to the hardwood.

Her accomplishments on the court, dedication to coaching, and ongoing commitment to community service reflect the values and spirit of Prairie View A&M University. Monica Smith's lasting impact on the women’s basketball program and her continued influence beyond the game make her a distinguished member of the Prairie View A&M University Sports Hall of Fame.
